PRESS RELEASE

SELF SUFFICIENCY: A REVOLUTIONARY ACT
RE-USE, RE-CYCLE, RE-FINISH

In an age where wars over petroleum create so much hurt and unnecessary destruction, and where corporations do almost anything to make a buck, growing your own organic garden is undoubtedly a revolutionary act. Furthermore, having the courage to step into the future and seriously contemplate and implement a self-sustainable initiative creates hope for many.
The madness that seems to guide consumerism, narcissism, greed and the love of money, toppled by the urgent call to action by spiritual leaders, scientists, peace activists and environmentalist when warning us of an imminent ecological disaster was enough reason to make me, wholeheartedly, engage in the development of our humble initiative at Quail's Patch.
In 2005 I moved to a semi-remote area of British Columbia, Canada; where I purchased a little cottage located in an Indian Reservation. I lived there with no electricity, no running water and only the convenience of an outhouse! With no car, no electrical tools to plug in, and virtually no money, the task of developing the place seemed absolutely unattainable. Specially to my curious and stund neighbours. But, with much love, and the love in the hearts of all of those who helped in the adventure we can honestly say that Quail's Patch is a success and it hopes to be an inspiration to those who live with many disadvantages, limited financial resources and in need to heal.
From bush and harsh brush and an unfinished dwelling, we now see a charming little cottage with three thirds of an acre dedicated to organic garden and medicinal herbs, chicken coops, and fruit trees. All the work got done by hand, including carpentry and pluming, and as income I had only basic disability benefits at my disposal. I now want to share the experience with those young in age, and the young at heart. Adventurous and courageous people who are looking for hope and a new refreshing future.

My father, Gonzalo Marcial Toro Garland

For the Record...
PRESS RELEASE
In January of this year my brother Gonzalo Toro Fernandez was apprehended in Santiago, Chile, for acts of terrorism. The news came as a shock to family members, bringing up past hurts and still unanswered questions as to how the events of September 11 in our native Chile affected us all - not only as a family but as a Nation. Our father was brutally assassinated by the forces of Pinochet in 1974, bringing a prosperous family and historical era to an end. As legitimate descendants of an old oligarchic family, we once understood the responsibility of being part of the history of a nation. A history which slowly fades away in an ocean of faces that constitutes a new world order, namely globalization. Regardless, that history once tied us together, it was the link that brought us from a past to a present, to what we understood as to be deeply rooted in Chilean history. And it is this history that presses me to respond to the actions of my brother whose name appeared all over the national press.

I was hopeful, that to a more or lesser degree, we as a nation had learned how destructive and hurtful a coup d'etat can be. A coup that more often than not resembled a civil war, in which brother went against brother, sister against sister. It often takes generations to heal these wounds, and I am appalled at, once again, having to witness destructive behaviors such as that of my brother. I do not endorse terrorism or any act of violence for that matter. After many years in exile and searching for answers as to what tore us apart my heart found refuge in the study of Buddhism and their non-aggression stand. According to Buddhist philosophy we are not to engage in actions that can cause harm and or hurt other sentient beings. What a lesson to be learned, what a path to lead!

It is with much sadness in my heart and with a sincere sense of responsibility toward the Chilean people, that I publicly distance myself from any act that could or does resemble terrorism. It is time for us as a people to transcend, to search for answers in our hearts rather than in the continuous polarization of ideologies. We don't want another September 11, we don't need more pain and antagonisms. And, for the record, even though most testimonies that describe my father, Gonzalo Marcial Toro Garland as a militant of the MIR are wrong in their assessment. My father, at the time of his death, at the early age of 47, was an avid student of Hinduism. His path, which had begun as a member of the Chilean Communist Party, had transcended into a much deeper spiritual search which led to the contemplation of the true liberation of the soul by embracing mystical spiritual realization. To this, many of his former students can attest. Gonzalo Marcial was a true humanitarian, a man that loved peace. A philosopher, a poet, a cartoonist, a composer, and a friend to many. A man that had the courage to surrender egotistical pursuits for the betterment of mankind as a whole.
