ARTIST STATEMENT
“Discovering the truth about history moved me greatly. I am thinking about visible and invisible things… it could be that art ultimately represents invisible things. Also, art is a balancer of our minds.” Michiko Suzuki
It has been my personal spiritual journey and search for self-identity as an indigenous person of the Americas what has shaped my art and defined my style. Motivated by a desire to transcend my own personal cultural limitations, I continually challenged myself while searching for an authentic voice and imagery. A challenge indeed, when faced with the task of rescuing a symbolic visual language buried in a culture built upon a fragmented history. Regardless, throughout my journey, I’ve done my best to remain true to my own creative process. At this juncture, a circle for me has been completed – identity, spirituality, and a defined narrative.
Taking inspiration from both North and South American indigenous motifs, my visual representations contain an aesthetic rooted in a tradition of indigenous design, and translate effortlessly in the creation of an assortment of surface designs which are applied in the construction of highly decorative canvases, tapestries, backdrops, and hand constructed fashions.
